Real Estate Tax Relief for Seniors and Disabled Veterans in Ohio

Updated: Jan 16, 2025

Homeowners who are 65 years or older, as well as those who are permanently and totally disabled, may qualify for Ohio’s Homestead Exemption, providing valuable property tax relief. Thanks to recent legislation passed in 2023, both the income threshold and the exemption amount will adjust for inflation annually, offering additional financial support to eligible individuals.

Wood County Auditor Matt Oestreich expressed his enthusiasm about the program’s expansion, particularly the increased thresholds for 2025. “It’s a great program, and I’m excited the state decided to expand the income threshold and exemption amounts,” Oestreich said. “State legislators, including Representative Ghanbari and Senator Gavarone, understand the hardships faced by seniors and disabled veterans. Hopefully, this is just the first of many steps toward broader tax relief.”

Key Changes for 2025

  • The income threshold for eligibility will rise to $40,000, up from $38,600 in 2024.

  • The exemption value, which reduces the taxable value of the property, will increase to $28,000, up from $26,200 in 2024.

  • Those already enrolled in the program will automatically see the increased exemption.

Additionally, there is an enhanced exemption for disabled veterans and surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty. This exemption also adjusts annually for inflation. For 2025, the exemption value will rise from $52,300 to $56,000.

Eligibility Details

While there are income and age requirements for seniors and disabled individuals, there are no such requirements for disabled veterans or surviving spouses of first responders. Disabled veterans must be approved by the VA as 100% service-connected disabled or individually unemployable.

How to Apply

For more details on the Homestead Exemption or to apply, residents can contact the Wood County Auditor’s Office at 419-354-9173 or visit the official website at the Wood County Auditor's Homestead Exemption Page. For veterans' benefits, reach out to Wood County Veterans Services at 419-354-9147.

This tax relief provides significant financial assistance to eligible homeowners, ensuring that Ohio’s seniors, disabled veterans, and their families can continue to thrive in their homes.
