Deadline Extended! VA Gives Veterans More Time to Secure Their Online Benefits

Story by Maryann Pugh, February 4, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced an extension to the timeline for Veterans and beneficiaries to transition to a modernized online login system. The new system, which emphasizes faster access and stronger security, aims to simplify how users interact with VA health care and benefits information.

Initially slated to end on January 31, 2025, the deadline for phasing out the My HealtheVet username and password login option has now been moved to March 4, 2025. This additional time allows more Veterans to transition to one of the two preferred login methods, ID.me or Login.gov. However, the deadline for replacing DS Logon credentials with ID.me or Login.gov remains September 30, 2025.

This transition stems from VA’s efforts to provide stronger protections for its users. Announced in July, the department’s shift from the older My HealtheVet and DS Logon sign-in systems is part of a broader initiative to modernize access for Veterans, families, and caregivers. “With today’s announcement, VA is extending the final deadline by which veterans and beneficiaries can log in to VA.gov, VA mobile applications and other VA online services using their My HealtheVet username and password from Jan. 31, 2025, to March 4, 2025,” the VA stated.

A significant majority of VA beneficiaries have already adopted Login.gov or ID.me to access their health records and other digital tools. To ensure a smooth transition for the remaining users, the VA plans to increase its outreach efforts. This includes dedicated communications to Veterans who have not yet made the switch and offering in-person support at VA Medical Centers across the United States.

Looking forward, the VA’s focus remains on providing a seamless, secure, and user-friendly digital experience. The department is confident that these modern login systems will enhance both security and accessibility, ensuring Veterans and their families can safely and efficiently access the services they rely on.
